Domestic traffic — the origin and the destination point are inside of Estonia.
Freight turnover (in tonne-kilometres) — one tonne-kilometre is the transport of one tonne of goods across a distance of one kilometre.
International traffic — the origin and/or destination point is outside of Estonia.
Loading — loading of cargo on to the ship in the reporting port. Transit goods are included.
Passenger traffic volume (in passenger-kilometres) — one passenger-kilometre is the transport of one person across a distance of one kilometre.
Unloading — unloading of cargo from the ship in the reporting port. Transit goods are included.
Volume of transport — to estimate the volume of transport, the variables — the total number of carried passengers and passenger traffic volume (in passenger-kilometres) — are used. To measure the amount of goods, the variables — the amount of goods (in tonnes) and freight turnover (in tonne-kilometres) — are used.
Population
The survey population consists of economically active transport enterprises which have been included into the statistical register of economically active unit.
Statistical unit is the enterprise as a legal person according to its main activity.
Sample
Complete enumeration is applied in the case of enterprises whose main activities are railway transport, water and air transport as well as passenger transport by road. In transport of goods by road all enterprises with 20 or more employees are enumerated completely. The rest of enterprises has been sampled.
Estimation
Population totals are estimated basing on the sample data. The data of nonresponded enterprises with less than 20 employees are replaced by the corresponding means of the responded similar enterprises. The data of nonresponded enterprises with 20 and more employees are replaced by their own data from the previous period.
The main activity of an enterprise is defined by the Estonian Classification of Economic Activities.
